The Story of the Twelve Apostles

They started out as average, unexceptional men of their time: fishermen, farmers, local magistrates. But their dedication to a prophetic Jewish preacher in the backwaters of the Roman Empire transformed them into revolutionaries and, in the process, changed the world itself in ways that would reverberate across time for two thousand years.

Now, discover the extraordinary untold stories of the men chosen by Jesus to bring God's plan to the world. Among them is Peter, who denied Christ three times but later became a "Rock"; James and John, the fiery-tempered "sons of thunder"; Matthew, the tax collector later murdered by cannibals; Simon the Zealot, the anti-Roman fanatic eventually "cut to pieces" preaching in Spain; and Judas Iscariot, whose betrayal would be paid for with silver and suicide.

From their early fear and discouragement at the shock of the Crucifixion to the final acceptance of the resurrection and their epic mission to spread the Gospel through the known world, it's an inspiring, astonishing story of the little-known men who became The Twelve Apostles.

Who were the 12 disciples?

The names of the twelve disciples of Jesus are Simon Peter, Andrew, James (the son of Zebedee), John,
Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James (the son of Alphaeus), Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot
and Judas Iscariot. (Matthew 10:1-4 and Luke 6:12-16)

The Apostles of Jesus

The 12 disciples/apostles of Jesus were the foundation stones of His church, several even wrote
portions of the Bible. In Revelation 21:14 we are told that the twelve foundations of the wall of the
New Jerusalem will have in them the names of the twelve disciples/apostles. It is evident, therefore,
that God attaches great importance to these 12 men.  As we study this courageous first-century
lives, and what discipleship meant in the time of Jesus, we may expect to be aided in developing a
Spirit-directed twenty-first-century discipleship as Christ must have meant it to be.
The following
biographical information about the 12 original disciples of Jesus uses the New Testament accounts
along with the most respected legends and traditions. We do not mean to infer, that legend and
tradition constitute historical fact. We do feel, however, that they do have value in the study of the
lives of these men who "…turned the world upside down…"
