About the Author:
Saint Francis of Assisi was an Italian Catholic friar and preacher. He is known as the patron saint of animals and for his love of the Eucharist, for his sorrow during the Stations of the Cross, and for the creation of the Christmas Nativity Scene. He founded the Order of Friars Minor (authorized by Pope Innocent III in 1210), the Order of St. Clare, and the Third Order of Saint Francis after abandoning his family's life of wealth for a life of poverty. In 1224, he received the stigmata, making him the first known person to bear the wounds of Christ. He died on the evening of October 3, 1226, during a reading of Psalm 142, at his request. He was proclaimed a saint on July
16, 1228, by Pope Gregory IX
