THE WONDERS OF THE VATICAN LIBRARY
The Vatican library is resplendent with books, artworks, tapestries, rare coins, and other wonders collected throughout the ages. This documentary on the fascinating building offers an incredible, in-depth look at the valuable stored items, as well as showing off the awesome architecture of the building itself. A treasure trove of historical artifacts, the Vatican library is a jaw-dropping sight.
More than a repository of priceless art and antiquities, the Vatican Apostolic Library, as we learn in the compelling The Wonders of the Vatican Library, is a veritable history of the Church of Rome and its governance of Catholic dogma. Written and directed by Vincenzo Labella, producer of Franco Zeffirelli's beautiful Jesus of Nazareth, Wonders is not so much for armchair tourists as it is for fans of great storytelling drama. The cornerstone of the Vatican, Labella tells us, is the fact of St. Peter's martyrdom, which inspired the construction of both the Basilica and the Library. While the latter contains many precious manuscripts and staggeringly beautiful gifts from faraway lands, its most important asset are scores of frescoes depicting such important events as the church's Council of Trent, a response to Luther's Reformation.
The second disc in this volume concerns a fascinating history of the Rosary and its roots in the cult of Mary-worship.
